Apologies if this has been answered comprehensively elsewhere but I cannot find it! I am finally buying a full Mac system to work on our films inhouse. I am still confused about the G5/Mac Pros and Cons. The machine will be an editing machine used for nothing else, it would run FCP Studio Pro, AE and a few other image based apps.
I can buy an end of line Quad G5 for the same price as a midline MacPro.
What do I do here? The G5s are still lightning fast and all my software runs great on them. We work with SD/HDV and in the future we would look to be editing ‘real’ HD inhouse.
Any thoughts on this? Future proofing etc

    Thanks,
    James

    James,

The RAM for the MAC Pros will set you back considerably more than the RAM for the G5s, so the price for the new machines will be higher. In addition, owners of Mac Pros are experiencing some issues with FCP and other apps and drivers. Even Walter Biscardi says that he wishes he’d waited a while to get his Mac Pro. So, you can worry yourself sick about future proofing and wind up on the bleeding edge, or get quad that is still pretty darned fast and know that it is going to be 100% reliable and issue free.
