Can someone explain the concept of “garbage matte” and what it is and when you would want to use one?

    Thanks.

A garbage matte lets you get rid of extraneous “stuff” that you don’t want in your shot.
Chroma key is a great place to use this option.
The image in https://forum.indymogul.com/showthread.php?t=34421 is a great example of where this would be used to get rid of the garbage on both sides of the green screen.
Your screen is long enough but only 6 ft. wide so you have a lot of stuff on the sides that you need to get rid of.
Get the chroma key looking the best that you can and then use the Mask option found in Pan/Crop to get rid of everything else that you don’t want in the shot.
