Like QuickTime, AVI is just a wrapper. You can use a variety of codecs with AVI.

“None” is lossless, but grotesquely huge. Lagarith (open source) or Grass Valley Canopus Lossless are both compressed lossless codecs that will get you the same quality in a much smaller file. Grass Valley Canopus HQX and GoPro CineForm are both mathematically lossy, visually lossless codecs that can wrap in AVI. I’ve been using CineForm for cross-platform intermediates for the last year.

I select OP1a at the very top. Then half way down the screen under VIDEO I choose AVC-I 100.

Walter S., have you had any issues with Cineform on the PC? I had very bad experiences with it on the Mac and am gun shy.

Also I like DNxHD and OP1a AVC-I because they are free and available to anyone who needs to play the files back.And they are accepted industry standards (US for DNxHD and Europe for OP1a) where Cineform is not.

What are your thoughts?

CineForm encode and decode has been flawless for me on the PC. I haven’t tried the Mac CineForm encoder, but I have had zero problems with the Mac decoder.

My general workflow when working cross-platform and using intermediates has been to render CineForm AVI intermediates on the PC, and ProRes MOV intermediates on the Mac. They each read perfectly on the other platform.

I like the idea of DNxHD, but there are two problems I have with it: 1) DNxHD only encodes standard HD rasters, and I do a lot of non-standard large-format work; 2) the QuickTime wrapper means an instant performance hit with Premiere Pro.

I also like your MXF OP1a AVC100 suggestion, but it shares the raster-size limitation with DNxHD, and there’s a bug in the current release of Ae that forces it to render anamorphic HD.

CineForm handles large rasters beautifully, as does ProRes. I keep meaning to really dig into Canopus HQ, but I haven’t put it through the paces yet.

I do a lot of work with image sequences, too.

On the Adobe forum the programmer that introduced that bug fessed up to me about creating it. 😀

He said until its fixed if you export AE thru AME this issue can be avoided.

I can understand your preference for Cineform due to its ability to handle nonstandard video displays. I guess I will continues with MXF OP1a until I have a good reason to switch.

I also have been using cineform on the Mac for the last year with Premiere Pro and have had no issues with it. The performance boosts that it gives too are really excellent over H.264 acquisition codecs.

Getting way off topic, but Walter, have you done any sort of articles on cross platform workflows with Adobe? We have issues there relating primarily to the shared storage and how the Macs and PCs see the storage differently requiring us to continuously be relinking media when we shouldn’t have to.
