  • Gamma shift when exporting MP4

I know this is a known issue, but I have yet to see a viable solution.

Working off PC and exporting via Adobe encoder.

When exporting H.264 in an mp4 container, there are significant gamma shift issues that void several hours/days of color correction work. It really washes out the color. I have viewed these exported mp4’s in quicktime and VLC on multiple computers and the issue is still present.

Quicktime MOV exports seem to be fine, it is only when exporting H.264 mp4.

Some have mentioned changing the NVIDIA settings which seems to be an internal fix for that monitor, but I am exporting video’s that will be going on the web for distribution. I really need consistency across all media platforms.

This is a very big deal that needs attention and hopefully a fix is in the works if it is not already out there.

    Thanks,
    Austin

[Jason Jammer] “I have viewed these exported mp4’s in quicktime”

Do not view color critical stuff in Quicktime. It just can’t show gamma properly.

The only way you can get close to color consistency is if you are making a movie that is graded in a proper suite and shown in theaters with calibrated projectors. There is zero way you can ensure consistency on the web because you can’t control how people have set up their monitors. Is it warm? Is it cool? Is it green?

I’m currently having this same problem and am trying to find a fix. Found threads that have solutions for FCXP but not Adobe. I’m kind of surprised at how difficult it is to find useful information on this known bug in the H.264 codec. I tried a utility called Quicktime Gamma Stripper https://www.thedvshow.com/vault/detail.php?id=QT%20Gamma%20Stripper that’s supposed to strip the gamma tag from the H.264 file to prevent the player codec from altering the gamma but the program errors when I try to use it. Does anyone know of a fix for this infuriating issue.

Did you ever find a solution? I’m still fighting this issue. Premiere CC2015 exporting to h264 for Vimeo/Youtube, all washed out 🙁

My issue turned out to be caused by the Nvidia video card. The card limits the dynamic range of the desktop for some reason yet not in premiere pro. In the Nvidia control panel, under “Adjust video color settings,” you can choose the advanced tab under “How do you make color adjustments,” to change the dynamic range from limited to full.
