    Macbook Pro. 10.5.5 / AE 8.0.0.28 / QT 7.5.5.

    Mac Pro Tower. 10.5.6 / AE 8.0.0.27 / QT 7.5.5

So I see that I have a slight mismatch in After Effects version and one box is on 10.5.6, but QT is the same. Does anyone know if this would account for a gamma shift in renders? I’ve double check AE’s color working space, etc… and they’re both exactly the same. I’ve been down the road with QT gamma problems before….

FWIW, the tower is hooked up to a CRT via Kona 3/sdi. It’s renders look the same as the Kona preview in After effects.

Thanks! I probably need to align system specs perfectly before even posting this, right?

It may just be me, but I wouldn’t compare between two systems with different graphics cards. I’d judge by the CRT and ignore the MacBook Pro.

It’s not the graphics cards, it’s the actual quicktime renders from After Effects. The same project file produces difference results on two almost identical machines. Basically it makes any laptop based render invalid…. which is highly frustrating.

I’ll match up system specs perfectly and try some more tests. It sucks because these Quicktime gamma problems were a huge issue about 2 years ago…and I thought we had beaten them.

Ah. I see. I thought you were viewing them on two different stations, but you’re rendering them on two different stations, then viewing them on two similar stations?

Have you tried rendering on the two different stations, and then viewing them both on one station?

Precisely. Rending at home on the laptop, bringing those Quicktimes into studio, adding them to the project. If I do any tweaks in the studio to the AE project file, they render out with different gamma than the laptop did.

I’m guessing the laptop doesn’t have the exact same codecs loaded in the system. See if there are any suspect codecs on the laptop or desktop that might interfere. Also the Kona card on the desktop might be causing it.

    Good thought.
Also, have you tried rendering to a TGA sequence on the laptop? Though it’s an extra step, it might take QT out of the loop.

we all know that apple is not capable of giving out updates with proper software coding nor deeper information on what has been fixed than the ever boring headline:

QuickTime 7.6 includes changes that increase reliability, improve compatibility and enhance security. This release is recommended for all QuickTime 7 users.

they could write lorem ipsum… it would not make any difference.

i refer to Stu Maschwitz Blog about Quicktime 7.6 and he writes:

Apple released Quicktime 7.6 today, which “includes changes that increase reliability, improve compatibility and enhance security.” Sweet. Undocumentedly, it also changes how Quicktime movies made with the Canon 5D Mark II are decoded—for the better.

Yay! Problem solved, I guess. This is a scary thing for Apple not to document in an update though, because it will radically change the appearance any 5D clips you’re already working with. So update with caution, especially if you’re in the middle of a project.

for him-the better, but Avid has put out warnings on their site NOT to install QT 7.6 in any case.

so, apple is putting undocumented changes into their software. hidden features to suprise us Users?
i think they are letting us betatesting their software over and over again with every release of Final Cut Studio and Quicktime.

I HATE apples customer philosophy – in fact there isn’t any. They and their “rumors”…

It’s really time to do something against this policy because WE PAY for their crappy upgrades and betas.

I do not give a damn about their other iCrap.

So Wassup Apple? Take the word PRO out of your applications and sell Final Cut for 79 Dollars, because in a few years i can do the all the same crap editing in iMovie, iLife and whatsoever BS software you’re creating – for the better?

a billion dollar heavy company goofing around with people who earn their daily bread with apple applications?
but please count me out of your silly games.
