Gamma Guide
Posted by Eli Mavros on November 12, 2009 at 4:43 pmDoes anyone know of a comprehensive article about all the gamma shift business between Macs vs. PCs, computer monitors vs. broadcast monitors, and quicktime vs. FCP vs. After Effects? This stuff seems to always be confusing to me and most others I work with.
Thanks,

November 12, 2009 at 5:13 pmWell that’s beginning to change with Snow Leopard FWIW…
But Mac’s have traditionally displayed gamma at 1.8 and PC’s at 2.2 So this means that if you used a pre Snow Leopard OS, what appears on a Mac as being OK, will appear on a PC as being too dark. That issue has been what’s been around. HOWEVER… if you’d used h.264 as a codec, it’s smart enough to know if it’s being accessed by a PC so changes the gamma automatically. Other codecs didn’t do that…
Does this help?

November 12, 2009 at 5:34 pmHere’s some info and really a history of how this all started especially relating to Snow Leopard:
https://blogs.adobe.com/jnack/2009/09/why_your_web_content_will_look_darker.html
Here’s what gamma is from Chris and Trish Meyers:
https://help.adobe.com/en_US/AfterEffects/9.0/WS44E9CED2-117D-4c19-879E-D553BB88B886a.htmlSome more adjustment info from Apple:
https://support.apple.com/kb/HT2026We’ve dealt with the issues for some time working with broadcast video which is basically working in the 2.2 gamma in most instances. So trying to get a true representation with monitors especially as we move more into the file-based world can be a little daunting-hope this helps!

November 12, 2009 at 7:05 pmThanks for the insight guys. Jerry, strange thing is, a co-worker is claiming to be having some gamma issues he thought he had solved, even though he is running Snow Leopard. Dan, helpful articles…I actually just had to deal with this whole gamma problem when working on a Turner project! Think we got it all squared away for that one, just looking to get a grasp on this whole thing for future projects.
Thanks,

I am going to bet that they upgraded to Snow rather than a clean install.
When users upgrade FCP workstations to Snow, the QT gamma bug persists since the upgrade does not remove the older version of QTPro.
if you do not trash all of the older QTPro pref files, and then trash QT 7 ( the QT7.app will be in the Utilities folder) and reinstall ( i had a serial number- not just the QTPro Free that comes with FCS)

December 22, 2009 at 12:53 amHi Gary,
I did exactly what you mentioned, installed FCS3 on Leopard, upgraded to Snow (some months later) and appear to still have the gamma bug.
I can’t seem to find any more information on deleting QT7 and its prefs on the net, well at least not in reference to this particular issue. Perhaps you could point me to a forum post that I’m missing or tell me more specifically what files need to be deleted?
Thank you for your help,
Sam
