  • Gamma (and color) shifting from AE to FCP from RED Files

    Hello

I’ve seen posts regarding this issue, but as new software, codecs, tech surface, the issue continues.

I am working with RED files now, I import the proxies straight to FCP without conversion and they look fine.
The problem starts when these files are exported to AE using either Prores 422 or 4444.

In after effects they look fine, when I render whatever I’m doing, I preview the result on a Broadcast Monitor (Sony HR SD) and it looks fine, even after rendering the file, I can see in a Qtime window that the file is consistent, but when I import it to FCP, something happens.
The gamma gets al sqished, and the croma goes up.
If I try to apply a gamma correction filter, I can get the luminance to be almost where I want it, but the saturaion is poor.

What causes FCP to interpret the file “wrong”. In the broadcast monitor it looks like in FCP, dark and saturated.

I have my sequence set at 1080 24P with 4444 codec, I export to AE using this same codec.

I use FCP7, AE CS4 (9.0.2) and the RED One had build 20 loaded on a macPro Quad Xeon, have snow leoppard installed, and an old Aja IO Rack Module (SD, no HD)

Am I supposed to have my AE project at 8bcp or 16 bcp?
Is qtime supposed o have the legacy swithc on or of?
Does AE needs to be set for Mach Legacy Gamma and Blend using 1.0 Gamma?

You input will help a lot

    tnx in advance

This worked for me on a 1080i Prores project on 6.0.5 and AE CS3:

“Spoke to one of the very helpful guys at AJA and he suggested removing a codec that installs with the A Io control panel. root/ library/ Quicktime/ AJAUncompressed”

Unfortunately this codec is not present on this computer, so the problem persists.

    Any other ideas?

    Thanks !

If you have an AJA you should have this file…are you sure you’re in the right directory?

Have you tried rendering to the animation codec?

I could not find the said file, neither in the user (library) folder on or the root (library) folder, but, I solved the issue by exporting from FCP in NONE and rendering the composition in NONE and them bringing it back to FCP.
This card is so old, and it’s driving me crazy, if I set it up for 10 bit 525 Betacam it screws the gamma, so I have to set it to 8 bit hence limiting my range.

I’m looking forward to buying a new card, either Black Magic, Aja or Matrox.
    What u recommend?

    tnx again

Glad you solved it. Have you checked on AJA’s site if you have the latest driver? I tend to use the fail safe animation codec as it transcodes and renders faster in AE, and let FCP do the rendering in whatever timeline you’re working in. I prefer AJA myself.

    have you tried:

I just posted some information on working with ProRes 4444 between After Effects and FCP.
