I know this must be here on the cow somewhere, but there’s a level of panic developing this mornig.
My G5 gave me the “grey screen of death” when I powered it back up this morning (brougth it down during some very band thunderstorms just to be safe – oh well). I’ve recycled the power a couple of times, each time I end up at the “grey Screen of Death” and I’m instructed to recycle the power. Now the fans have moved into turbo mode, but it doesn’t get past the initial light grey screen.

Is there a way to force open the disc tray so I can boot from disk warrior?

    Thanks!

This doesn’t sound like a hard drive issue…that it won’t boot because of an OS issue. It sounds like serious hardware troubles. Bad logic board…bad RAM…bad processor. First thing to do is unplug EVERYTHING from this computer besides the monitor, mouse and keyboard…then try to boot. Failing that, remove any PCI cards you added…any RAM…then try. If it still won’t boot, try resetting the PRAM. If still no…then it is a serious hardware issue and will need to be brought in for repairs.

This probably won’t help you, but check your serial number. I found out yesterday there might be some power supply issues for some G5’s – look at Apple’s site: https://www.apple.com/support/powermac/powersupply/repairextension/

“The affected Power Mac G5 models were sold between approximately October 2005 and August 2006 and feature Dual 2GHz, Dual 2.3GHz or Quad 2.5GHz PowerPC G5 processors.”

    Serial Number Ranges

    CK539xxxxxx – CK608xxxxxx
    G8539xxxxxx – G8608xxxxxx
    YM539xxxxxx – YM608xxxxxx
    RM539xxxxxx – RM608xxxxxx

The Apple employee I spoke to about this said the majority of the time the computer just doesn’t start up at all, but some have had erratic behavior, and not all computers in this range will have problems.

Hope you’re able to sort it out. Good luck.

You can boot-up “holding down the mouse” to eject a stuck DVD/CD

    Update –
Took advantage of my Apple Pro Care membership, made an appointment at the local Apple Store, and they were able to get it to boot. Seems there was a problem with the boot drive and it was hanging up. In and out of the store in less than an hour, spots have shipped to the networks, ran disk warrior this afternoon, and we move forward with another set of commercials in the morning.

I will be much more carful about making sure I have projects like this backed up to external drive in the future.
