  • G5 Powermac: Xpress Pro to Media Composer?

    Dear All,

I am looking to upgrade my Avid software from Avid Xpress Pro 5.8.4 to Avid Media Composer 3.0, but I am concerned about the whole compatibility issue. My computer is a G5 Dual 2 GHz Powermac G5 with 2GB DDR SDRAM and an ATI Radeon 9600 XT Graphics Card. I think the new Media Composer software only works on the newer Intel machines. Has anyone had a similar problem? And if so is there a way round it? And on a related matter, does anyone know if Avid Xpress 5.8.4 is compatible with Quicktime 7.5? Apologies for all the questions! Any assistance would be much appreciated.

    Many Thanks

    Peter

I am running Avid 3.0 on my Dual 2.0Ghz G5…but I have an NVIDIA card. The card itself shouldn’t be an issue…sure they recommend an NVIDIA, but you can still use it with an ATI card. I was able to capture DV and DVCPRO HD from decks and work with P2 footage no problem.

Yes, it is faster and better on my MacPro, but on the G5, it works fine

I briefly upgraded my G5 to 3.1 and got nothing but errors. It was pointed out to me by the Avid forum that the release does not play on a G5 so I had to go back to 2.8.4. How are you doing this?

Well, this was a WHILE ago. I have since sold the G5, but 3.0 ran not only on my G5, but it runs fine on my Powerbook G4.

Avid MC 3.1 is a different version, this one might only work on Intels. I am running 3.1 now on my MacPro and 3.5 on my MacBook Pro. 3.0.5 would be the one to try to run on the G5…nothing higher.

Man, when has Avid come out with so many quick updates? I mean, from 3 to 3.0.1, to 3.0.5, to 3.1, to 3.1.1, to 3.5…all in the span of one year! Not long ago this would have taken 3 years.

You missed 3.1.2, and they just released 3.5.1 a few days ago. At this rate we’ll be on Media Composer v74.1.3 by the end of next year!
