  • G5 Not recognizing Firewire or capturing.

I’m sure I’m just missing some little something. I’ve just purchased a Dual 2.0 G5 (was using an old 733mhz G4) and I’m switching my FCP 4.5HD over. Everything was working on the G4 including the DSR-11 and Sony DA-2 converter through firewire and capturing as a controllable device. I’ve put nothing on the G5 except what was preloaded and FCP, Compressor, Soundtrack, Livetype, Cinema Tools, etc. nothing else. I installed FCP fresh on the G5 and then did online updates. When I startup FCP I get the typical error message that it is “Unable to locate the following external devices: Apple FireWire NTSC (720×480)” This would usually mean that I hadn’t turned the unit on. Now I’ve tried either unit, multiple firewire cables, either of the two firewire ports and I still cannot get it to recognize either unit. All of my FCP settings on the G4 match the G5. The really odd part is that when I go to “about this mac” and get additional information, the G5 will identify the units properly. I can capture in iMovie using the DSR-11, but not in FCP?? Now, another odd thing is that when I go to “log and capture” the preview is disabled (obviously), but I can control the DSR-11’s play, rewind, etc. functions. When I try to “capture now” I get an error message “Attempt to capture video without a video device selected. Please select a video device in your capture presets and try again.” Does anyone have the answer to my brain fart?? What am I missing? I’ve already repaired permissions and trashed the prefs. Thanks in advance.

Try this, go into your Audio/Video settings. From there select Capture Presets. Select DV NTSC 48 kHz (assuming you are using NTSC). Down below, select edit. Under QuickTime Settings and Digitizer, what does the Input say? It should say DSR-11. Rename this setting DV NTSC 48kHz DSR-11. Also check out your Device Control Presets. Make sure that is set to Firewire NTSC.

The Capture preset is locked, but even if I go to a duplicate and edit that, it says “{Missing} DV Video” for the QuickTime Video Settings. The input is greyed out, but says “DCR-TRV900”, which is what is says on my G4 that is working. The Device Control Presets is set for FireWire NTSC. I’m running 10.3.9 (also on the G4). Is it possible that since this has something to do with QT Pro? For some reason on the G4 I was able to export using Quicktime Conversion to Mpeg2 (m2v) as an option, but now I cannot on the G5, the option is gone. I tried copying my prefs and .plist files from the G4 to the G5, but that didn’t work either. I trashed them again. Anything to do with a brand new drive? I’ve been reading posts about HFS+ and journaling. The G5 160gb is currently “Mac OS Extended (Journaled)” and I have no other drives in it yet. I’m looking to set up this G5 as exclusively for FCP Editing, redering and DVDSP encoding and buiding. No games or non-related junk, I’ll save that for the G4. Any other suggestions would be great. Thanks again.

I believe you need to reinstall FCP on your system.

Reinstalling did the trick. Thank you.
