Hi Mike. Bob O’Brien here. Hope you’re doing well.

Are you thinking about getting one, or do you have one and you’re looking for a comparison?

My G5 does not get that hot at all… because of all the fans. I have mine in the bottom of a rack mount unit adjacent to my editing console. In has never been objectionally loud. Sometimes, however, when I boot it up, all the fans turn on though and the screen stays black. Don’t know why that happens; a re-boot solves it… but boy is it loud when all those fans are going.

I don’t know about how the liquid cooled one are.

    Take care!

    Bob

    Hey Bob,
I was going to e-mail you next! You beat me too it.
Yes I finally am getting serious about going to FCP.
I am sure it cannot be any louder than my PC.
I am looking at an HD set-up.
    I will e-mail you off-line tomorrow.
    Thanks
    Mike

[Mike Schrengohst] “To all you FCP editors, how loud is your G5?? Can you leave it
    under your edit desk?”

    Hi,

    Not very loud.

Mine is under my desk and its fine.

    Best Wishes,

    Mitch

I used to think my IMB Intellistation was quiet, but my G5 is much quieter, especially since I no longer have a giant tower full of eight SCSI drives whirring loudly next to it.

The G5 towers are very quiet in my experience, the G5 iMacs are quite a different story!

I have to agree with everyone. My G5 is pretty quiet as compared to my drive array. Mine is under my desk, right next to me. Yeah, it does put out some heat and needs very good ventilation but that’s true of all computers. Yeah, it does get loud when all the fans kick on but that’s not all of the time. Overall, it’s the best and coolest setup I have ever used.
