Then buy the most you can afford NOW. this will hold you off for as long as possible.
[fookai] “f I need to do uncompressed HD I can just buy an HD capture card and put it into the G5. I think the HD Capture cards start at around $600.”
Nope not for that new machine, currently the only HD capable card for PCIE is the Kona LHE and it is $1790.

December 26, 2005 at 4:17 pmthanks walter. so would a sata pc card w/external sata hd be more beneficial over a firewire 800 g-raid for dvcprohd laptop editing? which route would you go? thanks once again.

December 26, 2005 at 6:34 pmDid you do any research on if any of your clients might actually need work completed in HD (any flavor).
In other words what type of ROI (return on investment) can you expect with your rush to invest in HD related gear? Or will the gear end up gathering dust with no hope of generating income?
The ” digital revolution” only applies if you can actually benefit from it as a successfully not just go along for the ride.

December 26, 2005 at 10:08 pmI haven’t used any SATA devices yet, though I did just receive a LaCie unit for testing. For laptop editing I think the FW 800 arrays like the LaCie or G-RAID’s are just fine.

December 26, 2005 at 11:57 pmI would imagine it will be weeks at the most for the Kona2 and DL HD Pro to ship in PCI Express. To me I would definitely not worry about the Intel stuff and let that settle out but PCI Express is here and will be the bus for the next few years. Why buy PCI X now just to see the new cards introduced in the next month or so.
And for SCSI I agree it can be a pain to setup but once that’s done it’s done. And I get 420 MB/sec using only 8 drives and a SCSI card. Fiber is much more expensive but the performance has improved with 4gb hardware. I don’t see SCSI as a bad move.
Some people tell me they are getting over 400 MB/sec using SATA raids but I have yet to see it myself.

December 27, 2005 at 9:52 amHi Gunliek,
I don’t think the Multibridge Studio is shipping yet. The Multibridge site only shows the Extreme shipping and sites like B&H show the Studio as coming soon. Do you know of anyone who has received one?

One thing we can’t do is speculate about AJA products. They’re about as tight lipped about their products as Apple. I’ve asked on the Kona forum several times about a Kona 2e and the answer is that if/when they have a K2e, it will be released when it’s ready.
For all we know, AJA is developing something even better than the K2 for the PCI Express machines. I’m hopeful that after MacWorld, we’ll learn a little bit more about the future, but most of the big stuff will most likely still be announced in April at NAB, which I will not miss this year.

December 29, 2005 at 12:06 amWell, there are folks claiming to have received it over at the BM COW…
That said, the backlog is probably not as bad as with the Panny HVX-200, but I guess it still is pretty bad.
