My new (older model DP 2.0) G5 arrived today and I’m curious what y’all think about upgrading the hardware before the inital power up. I have a radeon card, memory sticks, and a second hard drive to put in. I have a good amount of experience on upgrades, but never on a virgin system. I am also immediately jumping to 10.4 should I even wait till after the OS upgrade. Thanks in advance.

    Hi,

I don’t think it matters if you install the hardware first or later. Maybe run the system for a few minutes just to make sure there are no obvious problems with the bare system. Before the software might be good because if there are any problems it might be better if they crop up doing installs than doing production work. If the system doesn’t already have Tiger I would erase and zero the drive (zeroing maps any bad sectors). Zeroing might be overkill but it is a little safer. Then do a fresh install of Tiger. Repair permissions after the OS install, once or twice while you are installing your applications and after you finish installing applications.

    Best Wishes,

    Mitch

Remember, too, that OS 10.4.1 has been released; don’t forget to upgrade your OS before installing anything else (and repair permissions before and after the installs).
