I have a dual 1.25ghz Mac G4 that I’d love to make into a Final Cut computer. I know how slow it is, I know that it will be used primarily as a computer to log and capture as well as BASIC editing functions to teach a “budding editor”. I have Studio 2, and am wondering if 1.) Anyone else uses a computer this old for this purpose; and 2.) (and much more importantly!!!) What graphics card should I use that would be compatible with FCP as well as a G4 dual 1.25?

    Help is appreciated!

    Hi Scott,
I’ve been using until recently a TiBook 667 for capturing and cutting DV, but with FC 5.1.4.
I think that FC2 can be a bit heavy for your G4, but up to the FC2 specs, it can be installed.
You need a PCI-X video card (no PCI-Express). Last year I bought an ATI Radeo 9600 Pro (256MB) for my old G5. This one would works for your G4 as well.
    Cheers,

I use a Powerbook G4 1.67 for mobile editing…and I have FCP 6.0.4 running on it fine. Zero issues.

But you will have issues with the AGP card I think…I THINK. Not sure.

I have the same computer, and it ran FCP 4.5 fine, it has FCP 5.1 on it now, but it won’t accept FCS2. It has an ATI Radeon 9000 Pro, and when I tried to install FCS2 on it I got an OpenGL warning, which cancelled installation. The computer maxes out at 2g RAM too, so by today’s standards it’s a dog. For basic log and capture (but not into FCP6) it works fine. Editing/rendering is slooooooowww! So, it’ll work up to 5.1, but I would go for something faster if you can.

I’ve gone backwards with FCP 5.1.4, so I think I’ll be good. It’s really just for educational purposes, so I’m not looking to make this this scream or anything.

    Thanks!

I think that FC 5.1.4 have been the most stable version in the FC story.
You have to think about the QT version that works best with FC 5.1.4.
In my old LapTop I have QT 7.1.3

That must be what the trouble is that I’m having… I now can’t get QT to open… Thanks for the tip.

So, this may seem really rudimentary, and I’ve been researching it for about an hour now, but with the newer version of Quicktime installed, it will not allow me to install 7.1.3, even after uninstalling 7.5.5. It tells me that there is a newer version installed. Any tips?
