G-DRIVE MINI setup on MBP
OK, just hooked up my G DRIVE MINI via FW800 to MBP 2.8.
Z7U is hooked up to G DRIVE for capture. FCP will not see both devices at the same time. When I turn camera on, G goes offline with warning.
What am I doing wrong? I’ve never edited on laptop before, only my towers. Thanks -

If all else failsoutou might be forced to capture to your internal system drive, then move the files to the external drive for editing.

Sometimes you gan get away with it but for video capture I would never recommend it.
If your MBP has an express slot look into getting a esata card that you can use to connect to esata drives with (esata is 2x as fast as FW800) Or you would get a FW card that plugs into the express slot thus giving you a completely separate firewire bus.
There are no “technical solutions” to your “artistic problems”.

A firewire hub does nothing different than daisy chaining, you’ve got one firewire bus on your computer, period, end of story. You can increase the number of ports in and out of that firewire bus all day long, but in the end all data flows through that one bus, which is a bottleneck. This is why I told you that if all else fails you must capture the internal hard drive then move the data to your external drive for editing.
There isn’t an editor on the planet who’s happy with what Apple did to their newest laptops, but honestly, that information has been out there for many months now, and it’s common knowledge that the 17″ model is really the only one suitable for professional editing, as it still has an Express slot.
