  • FYI: How to edit HDV in Ppro 2.0 using DL SD card

Confused with the subject? OK… I recently had to do an urgent HDV edit shot with some Sony Z1 HDV camera’s. The only free computer available was a ‘Decklink Extreme’ SD. I opened up a new PPro 2.0 project and selected ‘Adobe HDV > HDV 1080i 25 (Sony 50i)’ as I am in PAL land.

I then used my Sony HVR-M10P deck and captured all the required tapes via the firewire control as native HDV mpeg files. OK… all is normal so far… but now a great trick!…

I then went to playback settings and set ‘external device’ to “monitor 3” as I had the Decklink card set as an extension to my desktop… and voila!… the output HDV image was realtme converted to SD and displayed on my grade 1 component video monitor AND output thru the SDI (albiet in letterbox 4:3 but if the Decklink could tell the desktop that it is a 16:9 monitor then Premiere might display it as 16:9FHA).

And for those who go “but I wanna preview in HD but not use my second vga monitor”… I can also view it on my HD monitor using the component out of the HDV deck via firewire but I haven’t had a chance to hook that up.

If you try and do the same thing with an HDPro card there are some conflicts that show up when you use the source viewer…so they are almost there.
