FxPlugs missing. No Smoothcam, Bad TV, etc.
Posted by Greg Strange on April 5, 2008 at 4:13 amI know this has been posted several times and I’ve seen all of the posts. But I haven’t gotten any results. I am missing a boatload of filters. Actually, ALL of the FxPlugs are missing.
I’m running FCP studio 2 (6.02) on a G5, dual 2.5ghz. I had FCP Studio first and then recently upgraded to Studio 2. I’ve run the updates via Software update, but the plugs are still missing. For ‘effect availability’ I have ‘all effects’ checked, so it’s not that. I’ve also re-installed three times (two of those times I installed the whole enchilada, content and all–that’s like a three hour ordeal). This is frustrating. Anyone, please help!!!

April 5, 2008 at 11:25 amAfter much time and effort, I found a solution. Nothing on these posts or Apples boards worked. So in case someone else is in the same position I was, here’s what worked for me:
Go to ~Library > Application Support > Pro Apps >Internal Plug-Ins > FxPlug. You should see two items inside the FxPlug folder: “Filters.bundle” and a folder called “SmoothCam.fxplug”. If you don’t, there’s your problem. I’ve uploaded the files to my server so you can grab them, decompress, and throw them into the “FxPlug” folder. This should get you back on track.

April 7, 2008 at 3:53 pmGreg, thanks for your efforts on this and congrats for figuring out a fix for you issues. Not many of us would have thought of the route you took or know anything about how to fix it. I have those items in my library.
Too bad this doesn’t help my issue. I’ve got a bunch of FxPlugs that work in Motion but don’t work in FCP. Mostly blurs. I only get a red “failed to render” screen when I apply them. so I’m still looking for a solution to my problem, seemingly similar to yours.

This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”

I don’t know if you still are having this post send you alerts when someone replies, or if you will read this, but I had to post a HUGE thank you!
I got a MacPro (upgraded from a G5) a little bit back, and one project I was working on traveled through the transition since it was still not locked by the time I got fed up and wanted to use my new computer. Things were going fine when I transfered everything over (fresh install of FCP and all non-shipped software) so I sold my old computer after about 3 weeks of smooth sailing (so I thought).
When the project was done, I went to print to tape, and all my FX plugins would show a red screen saying plugin failed to render. I was confused and scared I would have to get rid of all those plugin choices and figure something else out since I am at deadline.
I searched all the apple forums and cow forums with no help. Then I came upon this post. I figured what the hell, and gave it a try. I was missing the smoothca.fxplug folder. Why? I have no clue, as I said, it’s a fresh install of FCP on an out of the box computer.
I don’t know the cause, but am glad I stumbled on this post and now my fxplugins all work again!! Thanks for figuring this out, and even more thanks for posting the solution!!!!
Now, if I could just figure out why I get odd “refresh” looking lines sometimes on playback with this 8800 GT, where I didn’t get them before on this monitor with the old computer…I’ll be a happy camper. 🙂
thanks again!!!

July 9, 2008 at 5:12 amHey Greg I am having the same problem and the link to the file on your server isn’t working. Is there any way you can put that back up? Thanks for your help.

December 18, 2008 at 4:31 amI have both those items and smoothcam still does not show in Final cut.
(I assume you were referring to ‘proapps’ in the application support under macintosh hd and not under the user folder’s library>application support, because in the user folder’s application support there was no proapps folder)
Any ideas?
