  • FW800 raid in powerbook

    Hello:

I’m considering buying a fw800 card for my powerbook and then build a raid 0 disk with a couple of Lacie fw disks.

I think there are 2 options: building the raid (by disk utility, am I right?) using one channel or using 2 channels (the lacie fw card I’d buy has 2 fw 800 and 1 fw 400 connectors). I understand the 2 channel option would deliver better performance.

The important bit is: will FCP capture smoothly to the raid while the deck or camcorder is connected to the built-in firewire connector?

Is anyone out there working with this or similar configuration, and is there something else I should consider?

    Thanks in advance

The only way to get a 2 channel raid is by using the internal buss and the external. Since all the ports on the FW card are on the same buss, and both the FW400 and 800 internal ports share the same buss, you will probably run into problems if you also have a deck or camera attached to one or the other (with a 2 channel raid). Some people have reported no problems with that setup, but I find it hard to believe, and it’s certainly an anomaly. Barefeats.com did a number of FW drive tests with single and 2 channel raids, with Powerbooks, G4s, and G5s. I use a FW raid with my PB with 2 drives in a case, striped and plugged into one FW800 port (my AJA IOLA goes to the other port).

That’s clear… but I’ll be fine having 1 channel raid and the camera in the built-in firewire, won’t I?

Yes, no problem. Two separate busses.

I’m with Ed, the la cie 800 is very good. I us it for safety as a raid level 5, but if you use it on raid 0 with the firewire 800 on a powerbook DV or even DVCPro50 shouldn`t be a problem. Is the FW 400 on the same bus? If so, you get problems using both at a time. If you capture on HD (not on the raid) you are fine (you can copy the data on raid and work from there)
