    Well, since the command in FCPX for “detaching” the audio from the embedded video is called, BREAK APART CLIP ITEMS or alternatively DETACH AUDIO, you can see why I misunderstood you. The feature you’re describing is called, “expand audio/video”

    I guess I don’t really see the problem. Not every clip needs a J or L cut and since you can lasso a bunch of clips and expand them all at once, I don’t see the current configuration as particularly troublesome.

    (picture from FCP Express though, but works the same in FCP 7). It unlinks video and audio in the complete timeline, not only from a selection.

    Just to be clear, the wording Apple has been using is better multichannel audio editing. They really haven’t specifically mentioned mixing.
