Function question in FCP: “move and insert selected items to playhead”
Posted by Erik Lindahl on April 4, 2006 at 7:25 amI just got a question that baffled me. Is it possible in Final Cut Pro to:
1. Select a number of items in the sequence
2. Move and insert these where the playhead is at
3. Remove (since we acutally “moved” the itmes) from their first location
4. Tighten the edit together (remove any slug-space caused by the move and inserted action)Is possible?
I can select a clip and move it while holding down the alt-key to get a “move/insert” command. However, this is more usable when swaping a scene or two

April 4, 2006 at 10:25 amYes.
Use Shift-X to ripple cut the selected clips or selected area from the sequence.
Use Shift-V to paste insert at the playhead.
All the best,

April 4, 2006 at 11:06 amNo, that doesn’t quite do it.
Shift-X moves the playhead away from the area where I planned my insert, instead placing it were I’ve done my extract/ripple cut.
Shift-V does the correct thing but leaves the original clip behind.
Other options?

April 4, 2006 at 12:01 pmIt’s a multistep process. You select the material you want to cut out. You use Shift-X to ripple cut it out of the sequence. You place the playhead where you want it to go. You then use Shift-V to paste insert that material back into the sequence in the new position.
There is no magically move the selected material from where it is to the current playhead position.
All the best,

April 4, 2006 at 12:14 pmPerhaps it is now, but it should have to be. There really is no magic to it either. The two-step prosess could just be a one step-process.
For instance, when you review an edit you see a point “oh, here I want to add that clip I placed at the end of the timelime

April 4, 2006 at 12:34 pmFollowing your scenario the clips would not be selected. You’d have to go and select them first.
Why group of clips can’t use the swap function I don’t know.
If you think it’s an important function to have then go to Feedback and give details of what you want to do and how you want it to work.

April 4, 2006 at 11:00 pmYeah, your solution is a solution but really not perfect since after doing the ripple cut I lose track of where my playhead was previously.
The SWAP CLIPS function I reckon also should be applicable to many clips. Also, can you set a “hot key” or short-cut for clip-swaping? Sometime I wonder if that wouldn’t be faster than fiddling with the mouse 🙂

April 5, 2006 at 12:56 amDepending on where the media is relation to where you want to put it you can mark an In point or do a Lift edit before reinserting it.
Write up exactly how you want the keyboard shortcut to work and put it into Feedback.
All the best,
Tom
