Fun with FCS3, 10.5.8, and Graphics Cards!
Upgrading to ATI 1900 Info for COW
Working on a 2 x 2.66 dual core Intel, 4gb Ram, 7300 Graphics Card, LHe.
Using FCP7/FCS3 on Leopard, 10.5.8 and here is what happened:
I had a project I made on FCS2, which I have updated to FCS3.
Its XDCAM EX media @ 720p, but I am using ProRes422 as my render and export codec.
In order to edit some chromakeys, I opened up motion clips (.motn) from my timelines using “open in editor”. Then I made all the necessary adjustments in Motion and save the project. In some cases I exported a ProRes422 QT as well. I closed Motion, and return to FCP.
When I clicked anywhere in FCP, bringing it to forground/makeing it active. I got the wristwatch icon, the motion clip would go offline, and then got reconnected. (I had the preferences in FCP set to always reconnect)
THEN CAMES THE BADNESS: I would get a beach ball, and everything locks up, FCP, the Finder, whatever. Only the cursor moves. I couldn’t force quit cuz the finder wouldn’t respond, so I had to do a hard reboot by holding down the power button on the MacPro
Sometimes I would get the finder to work, but the diplay gets corrupted and I would get all this garbae on my computer monitors.
At first I thought it was a Kona Ownership issue, so I only had the Kona work in FCP, using just the computer monitor for Motion, but this made no difference
So I thought my graphics card, a GeForce7300, was at fault here, so I got an ATI X1900 card.
When the card cam in I installed it, reconfigured the slot for 16 lanes, and went crazy bouncing around different programs to get it to crash.
The good news was the system worked fine now, no crashes and it seem to switch between apps faster
The bad news (isn’t there always bad news?) was that now my Kona LHe Output was wicked laggy, like 8 Frames Per Second.!
I Uninstalled and reinstalled Kona Drivers, No Change.
I took out a Fire wire expansion Card, No Change.
I moved the Kona one slot away from the Graphics card (ATI was in slot 1, Kona Card in slot 2, moved Kona to slot 3) No Change.
Moved the Kona card back to slot 2, made sure it was getting 8 lanes (which it seemed to always be getting) and Voila! Kona Video out played in real time!Soooo…. Was it the Graphics Card? I am 90% certain it was.
Why was the Kona flaky? Dunno, maybe it needed re-seating? Maybe I needed to physically remove the card so the computer really really uninstalled the drivers?
Was the Kona card anyway responsible for the earlier problem of Complete System Hang? I am pretty sure no, as at one point I disabled the External Video on All the Apps.
I have been at the machine for several days since this, using the latest and greatest versions of the Final Cut Studio 3, bouncing around between FCP, Motion, Soundtrack, and even AE CS3, and its all good!
So I hope this helps someone somewhere, and if not, it was worth it for me to vent!
Thanks for your attention
