Don’t know if this is a lighting or a software question, but I need to emulate the Star Trek Transporter effect. A person stands in one place and lights shimmer over her vertically, and she disappears, to reappear somewhere else.

I am told that the original effect was generated by heavy top and bottom lights, with silver particles of some kind dropped within the “tube” of light.

Any suggestions on how to make something like this, without using silver particles, would be most appreciated.

Bob, my understanding was the original effect was relatively simple.

It involved filling the silhouette of the person with a shot of some liquid full of swirling glitter. (You didn’t say if you wanted to do it without the silver particles, or something simpler.)

I’d suggest another post on the After Effects forum.

thanks Jay, sorry it took me so long to thank you. I got some good answers, and wound up just doing a block dissolve which was just fine. The key to selling the effect, oddly enough, was getting the sound effect right.
