  • Full Quality playback problem? w/ HD footage

Posted by Christopher Worthington on January 19, 2009 at 3:57 pm

    Hey everyone,

My problem is during playback of HD footage when the timeline is at FULL quality. I can NOT see the footage when it’s playing(I see it in the source monitor but client monitor is black?). Also when footage is loaded into source(not playing), I can see it fine in both source and client. At HALF QUALITY the footage plays just fine.

The footage was shot on a P2 camera at 720p/60 and lives on an external drive, my avid project is 108i/59.94. The imported footage is DVCPro HD(HD720p/60)

I tried consolidating footage to unity and transcoding the footage to 1080i/59.94, and 30i to no avail. I’m confused, does Avid not support full quality playback of HD footage?

Like I stated, I have no problem playing footage at half quality. Thanks in advance for any assistance.

If you call Avid support, the conversation will feel much like an old Abbot and Costello routine.
“hi, I can’t seem to be able to play HD at HQ.”
“the adrenaline can’t playback HQ HD.”
“what?! so I can’t edit HD on the adrenaline!?”
    “yes, you can.”
“whew. ok so whats the problem?”
“you can only play it back in half quality.”
“what!? so I can’t edit HD on the adrenaline!?”
    “yes, you can.”
“whew ok so whats the deal?”
“you’ll have to export it as data, not play it.”
“I can’t watch HD out of the adrenaline?”
    “not in HQ mode.”
“HQ is the point of HD, correct?”
    “????”
“so I am to throw half quality before my client then export it without being able to watch it first?”
“you can watch it in half quality.”
“so your saying I can’t edit HD on the adrenaline?”
    “yes, you can.”
“did this phone call really cost a brother 500 bucks?”
    lol

    whoes on first?

I’ve never tried upresing in a transcode, but transcoding Panasonic P2 footage to Avid’s DnX HD codec allows full res playback to client monitor on my Adrenaline.

You mention running 720p/60 media in a 1080i/60 project. I don’t think that the Adrenaline supports the realtime crossconversion, you would need a Nitris box for that.

In fact, the information on https://www.avid.com/p2/ suggests that 720p/60 should be cut in a 720p/60 project, and nothing else (see https://www.avid.com/p2/p2_chart_lores.pdf).

I don’t think Grinner is right in that Adrenaline won’t play back full quality HD. Not at all, actually. I’d like to see that info either backed and confirmed or else: deleted.

Got it! Thanks Job! It was a format issue. I had forgotten about another editor doing some AE work in 1080i, so I originally created the Avid project in 1080i/60 to support this later. And cameraman now tells me he shot it at 720p/30 which is why I could NOT load them in a 720p/59.94 Avid project source monitor(without a frame rate error message to transcode). Did not want to use 720/29.97 HDV avid project because told it was lower quality?

Anyway, I TRANSCODED the orginal 720p/29.97 clips in a 720p/59.94 Avid project to unity as DNxHD 220 clips and they played fine in FULL QUALITY in the source monitor and timeline.

    Hope this helps all. Peace.
