    Hey All,

I’m having trouble getting full frames to work when outputting a ProRes file to DVCAM deck.

It seems to be hooked up right in the AV section. NTSC Firewire selected and VIEW> All Frames. When I scrub the timeline the image appears on the external video monitor but when I hit play on the timeline it only displays a still image on the monitor. When I stop play, it catches up with the last frame but it won’t play smooth video. And when I try print to tape it displays nothing. I have tried with mirror on desktop selected and de-selected and with the NTSC FIrewire in Dropframe and Non-Drop frame (which should it be?) The original file is a PRORES 16:9 24 fps file but it should export to a letterbox DVCAM in 29.97. I have tried the ‘different option for print to tape’ and no dice. It seems close but so far, no cigars.

Are you working in a DV sequence at 29.97? And rendered of course. FCP can do conversions on the fly, but true 24p out fw doesn’t seem to be one of them.

For example… I work with P2 720 24p footage that has pulldown added. I work in a DV sequence and it converts on the fly to letterbox DV.

But if I put a true 24p file with no pulldown to 29.97 in that timeline, I get the same result you’re getting. Plays on the monitor but not through firewire, until I render of course.

So if you’re working in a true 24p sequence, then it could very well be rendered, but if it’s rendered true 24p, then that’s not a frame rate that DV understands. Make sense?

Had you set your sequence as DV NTSC?

Thanks, I think you got it. Yes, my sequence was 24 fps and I usually output to HDCAm but needed a DVCAM version for a certain festival. I thought it would convert on the fly but obviously I was wrong then. glad you mentioned this, it seems like an easy fix.

So then, my quicktime movie file is 16:9 Prores 24 fps. If I place that movie file in a 29.97 sequence, that should be all I need then, yes?

    Thank you.

The capability to preview through FW have noting to do with the footage but with the Preview and Sequence setting.

    uh…

to output to a deck over FW the protocol needs to be one that can transfer as data to the deck.
    ProRes is not it.

To make this work you would need some kinda of video card to output over Baseband video or render your project back to DV / DV 50

Right. I think that as long as the sequence can be read in RT you don’t need to render it, but the sequence needs to be DV/DV50 to travel through FW.

    UPDATE:
Changed the sequence settings to DV and it played the ProRes Movie file perfectly to the external monitor and DVCAM deck. Thank you!

Ah, that’s what it was. If I tried to play 24p in the viewer, it won’t spit out firewire. But of course, put it in a sequence and the sequence adds the pulldown.
