As a non fan-boy of Sony or RED (I do own both actually along with Canon 7D, etc..) looks like FS700 will need to take out a 2nd mortgage on their house to get 4k RAW out of the nifty little FS700 2k/4k cam.

FS700 owners will need a new module called the HXR-IFR5 which will be priced at around $2000 in order to work with the new Sony AXS-R5 deck. (speculated to run $15k – $20k).

Also the new 4k AXS-R5 deck is Sony proprietary so it will only work on the S700, F5 or F55. FS700 owners might want to look at other options to record 4k out of the single 3G SDI connector on the FS700, but I don’t even think the AJA Ki Quad does single 3G SDI but I could be wrong.

Lastly the current price for 1TB SRMASTER media (60 minutes RAW @ 24p) is around $6000 so I would expect around the same for the newly designed media that will work with the AXS-R5.

It is safe to say, 4k RAW at least is going to be a VERY VERY expensive proposition for any of the Sony fans. With the recent truckload firesale (and new one coming) over at RED it will be FAR FAR FAR cheaper to acquire a RED Scarlet cam for internal 4k 16-bit RAW recording. Even with windowed or limited HFR.

Seems a little disingenuous the way Sony are marketing the FS700 by not mentioning future expenses.

Yeah, I think you are right. I LOVE my FS700 don’t get me wrong, it has been a huge step up from the DSLR and I am happy with my investment. It paid for its self on the first project. But your points, coupled with a few nagging things (like no unique file names to the clips, the 8 bit 422 out the HD/SDI, the internal AVCHD 420 codec, the slight lens slop with the MetaBones EOS adapter) I think that when it is time to go 4K RAW in the very near future RED Epic is looking mighty good.

Seems like a bit has changed since my initial post after some preliminary pricing was leaked out of Japan.

The AXS recorder may only be around $5000 USD, so combined with the HXS adapter for $2000 things start to look a lot different.

But for that money you really really gotta love your FS700 because in reality you’ll be investing almost the cost of the camera itself in the extras to shoot RAW not to mention the new memory cards that will be needed.

The FS700 has better low light than RED and has advantages being able to shoot internally with a codec for quick turn around jobs.

It will be interesting in the next week or so as official pricing is released on the F5, F55, HXS module, and AXS recorder.
