FRUSTRATING Jaggy / Anti Alias ISSUES with AE
I think this is the 3rd time I have posted this issue here not to mention other AE forums as well and thought I’d give it another go as I’ve never been given a definate answer.
AE seems to have problems with Anti Aliasing with it’s 3D environment. Whether it is AI Vector files or Solids or picts, as soon as objects are made 3d [especially circles] and a camera is added, AE can’t seem to deal with them when the perspective gets very sharp. The closer the camera gets to the layer being at 90′ to it the more jaggies it gets. This is an extremely frustrating problem that has continally limited my work and I believe it is a limit of AE but have yet to have this verified.
If it is unclear what I mean try this simple test:
Set up a comp 1024×576,
create a solid 576×576 with a circular mask and then another subtract mask in the centre so a ring is created
Turn the 3d switch on
Rotate it 90′ on the x axis
Add a camera and go up and down the Y axis. Notice how the jaggies get worse to closer to 90′ you are. The furtherest side of the circle should disappear completely as it probably at 90′ whilst the closer edges are not at as deep an angle.I have tried everything to fix this from continuous rasterisation, to motion blur, to gaussian blur, to depth of field. Most of these just cover the problem and in very slow moves the jaggies and the pulsing just gets too bad to use. There is also no difference in the FULL preview or final render.
My understanding is that because AE 3d layers have no Z depth they of course disappear at 90′. Due to perspective, circles will disappear increasingly beginning with the furthermost edges. I just thought there would be some subpixel correction in AE to correct this.
Does anyone have any ideas or know of 3rd party plug ins that may fix it. I’m wondering if Shake or Motion has these issues. It’s really embarrassing to not have a solution this time and time again when clients ask. I’m thinking that I should be using a full 3d program for all 3d, even the simple 2d/3d stuff like this. I have a comp with many rings in 3d space that pass the camera different points so this anti aliasing problem is all the way through it.
Thanks in advance
Danny
