I know this is probably an easy solution, but I’m rusty at fcp, and just getting back into it.

have FCP 5, and I can play clips from the viewer on an external tv, but if I try to play the timeline or a clip from the canvas, the first frame will come up then it will be frozen on that. The audio will come out of the TV, and the clip will play in viewer window, just not on the external monitor.

    thanks for the help

settings are video playback apple firewire ntsc (720X480) and External Video > All frames. dont know why the viewer would play externally and not the canvas or timeline.

From the FCP menu bar, go to: View->External Video and make sure that it is set to ALL FRAMES.

Close the Log and Capture window if its open

Close the Edit to Tape window (if open)

Make sure that the FCP Viewer and Canvas zoom setting is set to fit to Window

Click on the Canvas and press Shift + Z. Perhaps you are not in “Fit to Window”.

Here’s a couple more solutions if none of those work (probably just the usual “Fit to Window” problem):

delete FCP 4 preferences, they maybe corrupted

If you’re using an AJA Io, disconnect all FireWire devices from the computer other than the Io.

Remove drivers and codecs from other vendors.

poor RAID performance, as a test, try using a compressed codec.
