Final Cut Pro: 60 Hz Monitor Refresh Rate Interferes With Playback
This article describes how a 60 Hz monitor refresh rate can interfere with playback in Final Cut Pro.While playing clips in Final Cut Pro, you may notice dropped frames if the monitor is set to 60 Hz. To avoid this, be sure to set your monitor to a refresh rate above 60 Hz using either the Monitors control panel or the Monitor Resolution control strip module.
When setting a new refresh rate, 75 Hz is acceptable, but 85 Hz provides the best playback performance.

Interesting…. I have two Dell 2001FP monitors set to 1600X1200 @ 60Hz. The option to change to 75Hz is greyed out.
I don’t have any issue here, but its an interesting tidbit.Ron

Yeah… its kinda funny, isn’t it? I didn’t think you can set the refresh rate on a LCD panel. They are always set at 60 Hz. So, how is it that Apple is doing it when I have Apple LCD panels on a Mac? Hmmmm……..

How would this effect my setup when the Kona LH card’s default Kona output is the Mac desktop? My 3 monitor configuration has 2 mac LCD’s with n/a selected in screen rates, and my Sony monitor as 59.9hz with option only to change to 60hz. Even when FCP controls the card output, would the default settings create a playback problem… and dropped frames?

Is anyone experiencing this drop frame issue? I’m configuring a system now (Kona 3 & a Quad) and prefer the Dell 2405 over the Apple 23″ Cinema based on my research.

Quite honestly, I think this is a non-issue. I run 2 Dell 2001 LCD monitors (which I LOVE because of their 4 switchable inputs) and I have never had any drop frame issues. You can’t change the rates in the System Preferences nor Dell monitor Image Settings. They all play nice together…and these seem to be the unchangable defaults. Maybe the DVI connection has something to do with it? I can access image controls when I switch to composite and Y/C inputs. I don’t have the VGA hooked up….maybe one day I’ll hook up the old G4 and test it out. Somehow I get the feeling the settings will open up then.
