Okay,, this question is going to sound pretty retarded no matter how I phrase it so here goes:

What is the typical procedure for hooking up a TV or some sort of TV calibrated monitor to my AE previewer?

typically you’d have a video i/o card (like those from blackmagic, aja, matrox…), which would allow for ingesting and outputting video to and from a tape (or other baseband device). those cards also have monitoring ports, and that’s normally the port that you’d view on a broadcast monitor, though you could connect straight to the output.

you can also use a firewire port to a camera that has a broadcast monitor connected.

i may be wrong, but i think with later versions of ae, if you have a video card that has 2 dvi ports, and you have a dvi broadcast monitor, you can set the preview to use the second port to display the preview.

Canopus ADVC-300 (or another model) or a Firewire DV Camera…those are inexpensive solutions.
