We often have a need to ‘freeze frame ( to hold on the screen longer) either a piece of video,
or an animation with text. After the animation-movement stops on an After Effects file we have built, we like to freeze it-keep on screen longer. This also prevents us from having to
render an AE file when there is no more movement on it.
The 2 ways below that are explained seem to not yield the ‘cleanest’
frame we would like. Any other options?
Attempt #1. Park playhead on last frame of clip of video or .mov animation file.
Blade it, and highlight that single frame into the viewer window. Go to “Basic Motion” tab
and under the “Constant Speed”, type in however long we need the frame to stay up on
screen. We often do this with animated graphics for a car commercial that we built in “After Effects”. Yields “jaggies”, like just 1 field was frozen.
Attempt #2: Park playhead over desired area of clip, go to File-Export-Using Quicktime
Conversion,Options-Still Image, pick png or pct file and save it. Now re-import this file
from our real-time drives and stick on timeline. Works great for full frame SD video, but
still not much better when graphic logos or text is involved.
    Thanks,

I use option 2. FCP also has a command to make a still frame, but it seems to create problems when using the media manager so I don’t use that.

It would sure be nice FCP handled it more like AE does.

Is there some reason why you can’t build the freeze frame into the AE comp? That would lead to no loss of time, effort, or quality.

Thanks Arnie! My AE skills are quite ‘infantile”. But I’ll show this to the head of our dept.
who works with AE almost every day.
