  • freezes when loading comp

    Hi,
I’ve been doing final touches on a project in afterfx. I’ve used a composition from premiere pro as the template for effects I’m doing.

It used to load slow but fine. But, now for some reason I cannot open the composition. It just freezes up. I haven’t added anything to the comp since the beginning, since I’m only doing color correction, etc.

Nothing’s changed at all since my last edit. My only guess is that it’s because the comp is too large or something. Is there a file size limit to compositions? I’ve tried opening it in both AfterFX 7 and CS3; neither of them worked.

    Any ideas?

Try importing the troublesome project into a new, empty project.

Thanks for the help, but it looks like that results in AE freezing as well. Hm, maybe it’s just corrupt now… or perhaps the comp has grown larger than my computer can handle.

I’m running it on a P4 3.0GHZ with 2gb Ram and plenty of HD space.

How big is your composition? What effects are involved? When you say that it freezes, does the application/your computer become non-responsive or are you still able to open other comps but nothing renders in the problematic one?

well, the file is about 5mb and the composition is only 8 minutes. It’s mainly just minor color adjustments and then magicbullet filters. I did have quite a lot of source files in the composition though (would this cause the overload?).

Basically, only AE freezes; everything else runs fine. I can’t open it to see if I can render. It doesn’t even give me a loading percentage.

[Ben Lunden] “well, the file is about 5mb”

I should’ve been clearer, I was asking what the frame size of your composition is.

[Ben Lunden] “Basically, only AE freezes; everything else runs fine. I can’t open it to see if I can render. It doesn’t even give me a loading percentage.”

What do you mean by loading percentage? The only time you would normally see a percentage reported is when opening the project file. If you have Caps Lock on (disabling the preview render) can you go into the composition without freezing? If so then it’s probably a problem with one of the effects you’re using.

The composition is standard definition ntsc widescreen. I tried opening with preview render off and it still doesn’t work.
