August 30, 2009 at 10:04 pmI stopped reading this thread after the third post – David correctly assumed that you did not do a clean install, and you confirmed this.
There is no reason to read any further. You thought you would save hours reinstalling your software – and now look what happened.BobZelin

August 30, 2009 at 10:24 pmWow! Oh so harsh! This is beyond the snickering and rolling on the floor laughing that was promised the “less than smart.” This is a total FU to the face.
I need to find a jacket. It’s getting pretty cold in here.

Jeff,
I wrote that post several days in advance of the SL release in order to humor Creative Cows into protecting their butts from the unexpected, and I know it helped a lot of people, because I’ve heard from a lot of them who thanked me.
I’m willing to concede that the humorous may seem harsh now, especially to those who may have missed the message initially, but to the many who did see it, and to the many who heeded the advice, I know I made them think twice about proceeding without protection and without cutting corners.

“We have been warning for weeks on these forums not to take shortcuts and do a clean install if you wanted to have a good working system. Bob just puts the message much more succinctly than the rest of us as only he can.

August 31, 2009 at 6:30 amForums are no place for the thin-skinned. Actually, I thought that was one of Bob’s kinder, gentler post.
As the saying goes, “Don’t make me go all Zelin on you.”

August 31, 2009 at 3:00 pmDavid,
I read in an earlier post to disconnect my Caldigit HD One while upgrading the OS. I also have two internal striped drives (software raid 0) and one that runs the OS. Do I need to pull the two striped drives when doing the clean install?

I thought Boob’s post was actually quite tame. That’s why I thought the comment was directed at me.

Internal drives running off the main board should probably be just fine, but you might consider popping those drawers out just for absolute safety if you’re at all concerned.

September 1, 2009 at 2:49 amI could have gotten confused since it was right under Bob’s post and well sometimes some of Bob’s post can seem to be a little strong. Didn’t think yours was harsh either but I don’t think you should be calling Bob a boob! 🙂

September 1, 2009 at 2:47 pmIt’s cool… I appreciate that it’s been on the boards. I jumped the gun more out of curiosity, because I’d heard that a snow leopard install was fixing the crash on quit problems with CS4, and it did! Everything works like a charm except once you render in FC6 is gets laggy and unusable.
Anyway, I’m just a one man studio and since i have two machines, I like to just see what happens sometimes, and at least TRY the easy route. Cause for all the Y-OSX-K predictions, it’s working really well on a simple upgrade. It actually saved me some headaches working this weekend to have SL. Hopefully this week I’ll have the time to sit down and do a clean install. Don’t you want to hear from someone who at least tried a simple install?
So, I’ll be a smart person later this week, but I think everyone here should get a massage and try not to perpetuate the IT guy stereotypes too much. I’m just a simple minded artist who likes to animate. My brain doesn’t like the future!
anyway, thanks for all your tips! Even all the I-told-you-so-s!
