Is there a way to take a still image from a motion picture and freeze it and then expand that frozen image across the timeline?

The response will depend on whether you have a Pro version of Vegas or one of the Movie Studio versions.

One way of doing it (this works in both Pro and VMS) is to park your cursor on the desired freeze frame, set the Preview window to Best/Full, click the “Save Snapshot to File” icon (looks like a floppy disc – top centre of the Preview window0, choose the desired format, give it a name, save it, drag it from the Project Media bin to the timeline and stretch it out to the desired length.

Since you have Pro though, here is what I consider a better method.
Right-click the clip and select “Insert – Velocity Envelope”.
Add 2 points near the end of the clip.
Set the 2nd one to 0% and move it to the very end of the clip.
Leave the first one at 100% and drag it to the end of the clip so that it’s on top of the 0% point.
The result is an instant freeze frame that can be dragged out as long as desired.
When you’re ready to add another clip, add 2 more points, set them to 0% and 100% and place them at the beginning of the new clip, positioning them the reverse of what you just did.

    Bonus hint for free 🙂
To constrain vertical movement of the point as you drag it, hold down the Alt key and then drag it.

I do it by selecting the singl frame you want in the timeline and rendering the (selected region only) to a file (BMP or JPEG), then import the resulting image back to the project as a media file. Then I put that into the timeline and stretch it using ctrl+drag as desired.

I’ll look into this other method though.

It’s great the way Vegas Pro is so flexible in that it offers many ways to skin a cat.
