I finally upgraded to PS 2020, after a lot of internal turmoil… and up to now it’s been fine, albeit some differences one has to get used to–but I’ve now run into the first obstacle! For some reason, now, when I try to free transform a layer, it no longer draws a transform box inside the work area, even if the image “spills” out of the work area, it now draws a transform box as big as the entire image, even what’s not inside the work area… Which means I simply can’t resize taking into consideration the dimensions of my work area. I’ve searched online for some time, and perhaps it’s an issue of me not finding the correct keywords, but I can’t seem to find anyone else is having this issue. I’m sure it’s not an issue, but rather function that Adobe has decided to set as default in PS 2020 for the first time. Don’t get me wrong: this would come in handy in some circumstances; only I think in most circumstances, it might be more of a hindrance.

The Perspective Warp would be a better tool for what you describe.

Another option is to select the image (Ctrl-A) before using Free Transform (in which case the image information outside of the canvas will not be transformed but cut out).
