free the size of effects box
As I add effects to a clip, AE expands the box right off the bottom of the screen and I have to resize. Is there some way to freeze the size of the box/menu?

I assume 6.5 or earlier. There is a setting in preferences that says something like resize effects controls.

In the Effects window, click on the arrow on the upper right side and uncheck the defaulting “Auto Resize”
