When adding subtitles it is often desirable to add a “box” behind the text for optimum legibility.

Instead of having to add, scale and position this box manually, this title effect does it all in one.

The subtitle sits comfortably in the safe title area, although it can also be racked up and down vertically as required.

You can choose the scale of the box in relation to the text, both horizontally and vertically.

You can also adjust the box colour (it defaults to a dark gray), as well as the box opacity if you want it semi-transparent.

And of course the main advantage is that the box will automatically scale as you add more text.

To install, unzip and place the entire folder in your User/Movies/Motion Templates/Titles folder.

Hey Thanks for posting this Simon, I’d love this but the link seems to be broken?

Hey Simon, I loved this tool! It no longer works with the latest FCPX 10.4.10. Any solutions or ideas on a fix would be great! Thanks, Joe

While I always support Simon (the Master of Motion Universe) there might be free alternatives.

There is the meanwhile free DH_SubtitleX from Digital Heaven or my TextUp (TextUp 2019 Templates and Effects). For latter you should read about the “tricks” on how to change backgrounds globally here:view a usage guide here

    Thank you, Andreas.

There are of course plenty of great solutions out there far better than my ancient offering, but my version was always free and here it is updated to the latest FCP X version.

    Hi Simon,

Sorry – shame on me. My reply was misleading/misunderstood.

I know that the TKY-Subtitle-Effect always had been free. The “alternative” was meant for “in case Simon won’t update” or so.

Hi Simon, I tried to install the motion file and no luck.

Tried to place in Generator as well.

Only thing I noticed is that your file does not have the .moti extension.

    Thoughts?

Not sure what the problem is – I downloaded the uploaded version and it opened fine.

But here’s a new version saved in the very latest version of Motion.
