    Hi Chip;

    It depends….

    The FRC has numerous functions; 1/. Off speed conversions for under / overcranking work, 2/. Format conversion and down converions. Audio may or may not be present depending upon which mode the device is being used.

    For off-speed work, ie ingest 720p 60 and output at 1080p 24, (2.5:1 slow-down) the FRC is working in it’s non-real time mode. This mode is used for under / overcrank processing and as such would result in very odd audio (people sound like chipmonks or whales!). Audio is thus not prcessed in this mode.

    For SAME frame rate format conversions (i.e. ingest 720p 24/60 and output 1080p 24) or for real-time work with format conversion,(i.e. ingest 720p 24/60 and 1080i 29.97) audio is passed and reclocked and then reformatted for the chosen output format. Likewise for downconverions, so long as no offspeed work is done, the audio is passed through, i.e. input 720 24/60 output 480i 29.97 (NTSC)

    Hope it makes sense.

    Hi Steve,

    Thanks for the reply. Basically, we’re still looking to make money on this boat anchor. Since it’s not needed anymore for the majority of framerate conversions, we usually just put it out on rentals with the camera for instant on location playback of offspeed stuff. What we’d like to do also is use it as an instant “video assist” with audio playback capabilities.

    I see that AJA has an HD to DVI/RCA converter box, and want to see if this setup will work. The frc is just a computer it seems logical that software could exist.

    Thanks,
    Chip

    Hello Steve : Is it possible to remote control the FRC trough the RS422 like a VTR or it is just for connecting a PC to it ?

    Rodrigo:

    Yes, but in a VERY limited way, it will respond to PLAY / REC type commands, but no editing / TC search style higher command functions. As it’s a computer, it obviously doesn’t have any transport ballistics latency for cueing etc, thus even if it responded to such commands, its speed would likely confuse the edit controller. Try it, but don’t expect much intelligence.

    Cheers,
