FrameLink workflow
Posted by Mark Burton on June 29, 2005 at 6:52 pmHi,
I am either being very slow, or its just not set out the way I expected, but can anyone explain their workflow for using FrameLink.
The way I understand it, you can make a QT file appear as a folder of DPX files and I think your supposed to be able to ‘make’ a folder of DPX files appear as a QT file?
Any hints?
Thanks

June 29, 2005 at 11:33 pmHi Mark,
It’s pretty simple. You drag and drop a Quicktime movie file onto the Framelink application and out pops a disk image containing individual frames of the movie as DPX files. This disk image is also accessible over the network as a disk volume.
Any changes you make to the DPX files will be reflected in the actual QT movie. If you delete a frame, that frame is also gone from the movie. Add a frame and it shows up in the movie.
To go from DPX to movie, double click the Framelink application and it will ask you for the type of movie you want to make. Fill up the details and you’ll find an empty disk volume as well as a corresponding Quicktime movie. Simply copy your DPX files into that disk image and you’re done. The corresponding Quicktime file will be updated.

This is sort of what I expected, but when I drop a QT file onto the application nothing happens (have tried DV, 10bit, BMD 10bit RGB). Should the disk image be in the same place as the QT file or on the desktop? Its not in either or anywhere else that I can see.

Again I get no disk image. I can fill out the details and the empty QT file is created on the desktop, but there is no disk image.
I am testing this on a Powerbook, so there is no Decklink card (although I doubt that makes a difference). OS 10.4.1, QT 7.0.1. I must be missing something, but like you say its pretty simple, so I am leaning more towards it not being me 🙂
Thanks for the help,

June 30, 2005 at 2:25 pmI’ve just read somewhere else that I do need a Decklink installed to use FrameLink, so apologies for the wild goose chase!
Thanks,

Indeed, you’ll need a DeckLink card installed in order to use FrameLink. However, this mounted disk is available over the network like a normal volume which means that another machine without DeckLink installed can still access the DPX files.

July 1, 2005 at 7:58 amcan you use it for other codec like uncompressed
it would be nice to use it in a network to have reel sequence of image in quicktime to share for 3D for example
why do you need a decklink to use it?
thanks
