  • Frame Skipping issue fix? ram?

When I’m working with my video in Vegas, most of the time the frames skip in the preview video window and does not ever play smoothly. Which is extremely irritating when mixing. I know this is probably because my computer is not fast enough to process it smoothly.

I have a 2.4 GHz Pentium 4 with 512 MB of RAM and working with a video that’s 636 MB in size. I was wondering if I added a 1 GB RAM stick would it make that much of a difference in my problem? Or would I have to buy a whole new PC to fix this?

    Thanks.

You don’t say what your source footage is but the answer is that your computer is VERY underpowered.
For less than $1,000 you can get a much faster machine, preferably with at least two hard drives, one for your OS and all programs and the 2nd drive for all your video, audio and image assets.

While Mikes answer is the right answer, I think you would see a dramatic difference with more RAM. Assuming that you are running at least XP, your OS is using up most of your RAM now.

The recommended RAM listed on the Sony site for Vegas is 1 GB RAM (2 GB recommended) so your PC is not within the specs required.

While I agree with Terry that more RAM would probably help, your PC is so old that I’m not sure I would spend another penny on it. If you could get RAM for $50 maybe I’d do it, but you could get a Quad Core for $599 these days so don’t put too much money into that old box.

I just ordered a 1 GB ram stick. So, I’ll have a total of Gig and a half now. It was $40.89 As much as I want one.. there’s no way I can afford a new PC right now. I sure hope it makes a difference and that my hard drive won’t break soon after or something XP

    Thanks guys.

I think you will definitely see a difference with 1.5GB of RAM compared to 512MB and it was probably $40 well spent. Let us know how you make out.
