  • Frame Rate Conversion for broadcast output

I’m working on an animated show in LA that is being produced in true 24fps. We are working with 1280×720 ProRes footage. The show will be mastered to HDCAM SR at 23.98 and then downconverted to digibeta at DROP FRAME 29.97 for broadcast.

The length of the showbuild the network provided is given assuming drop frame 29.97, obviously because that is what will air. However, our timeline is in true 24fps, so pulldown will have to be added at some point.

My question is this: What is the proper format/frame rate to deliver to the post-house that will be laying the show off to HDCAM SR? Since 1280×720 24fps isn’t a broadcast standard and won’t lay off to HDCAM SR, should we use compressor to convert it to 1920×1080 23.98? Should we let the finishing house do the upconvert to 1080?

Then, after the transfer to HDCAM, the downconvert to Digi is pretty standard, assuming the deck adds the pulldown. Right?

    Thanks for your help.

This all depends on the post house. I always ask someone on the engineering staff or on the ingest end of things how they want it delivered, then I prepare it to that spec.

    OK
since you are new to this I would let the Post do it all of the work from the conform to 23.98 and to the conversion of 720 to 1080 for your master.

This is a no brainer for a good post house, so you can get a couple of quotes on this.

FYI – HDCAM SR does record in 1280×720
