  • Frame rate and codec question for DSLR footage

I’m about start a feature film project that was shot with Canon 5D mkII .
I’ve optimized the material to ProRes 422 (in FCP7 with Canon plugin to get the TC metadata), since I figured the ProRes HQ is overkill for 4:2:0 8-bit material. Am I right? Unless Apple comes up with a better solution in a couple of months I will probably give the post house a FCP 7 project (ProRes 422) using the Xto7 and/or a playout master from FCP X. The final output will be a 4K DCP.

The footage is shot mostly at 24fps (which is actually 23.976 fps). Audio was recorded with SD 788T at 24 fps. All audio seems to sync fine with FCP X. There are only few scenes with dialog.
The question is: should I make a 24 fps or 23.976 fps project in FCP X? If I decide to make a 24 fps project should I conform speed in FCP X? I’m concerned about the audio sync issues, since I’ll try to output an OMF or AAF file for audio post when I’m finished.

I’ve done some tests with both Xto7 and Auto Duck and so far keeping the project at 23.976 seems give best results as far as audio sync is concerned.

    Any advice is appreciated.

Yes, finish in 23.976 as this will be the most video-friendly. Otherwise you’ll encounter sync issues. Your final master will be 1920×1080 @ 23.976 (progressive). This can be used for grading or output to your DCP.
