I thought that this would be the best place to post this question, if I was wrong please feel free to move it to the correct subject.

Ok so here it goes, not to long from now I will be shooting some horse training material that will be distributed on DVD for a client of mine. I’m not really sure of what frame rate to use because I will in the end need to deliver DVD masters for both NTSC and PAL. From what I’ve read shooting in 24p and then converting to 25p seams to be a good option however some of the potential motion issues with panning etc. makes me raise a eye brow. I’ve not really spent a lot of time working in 24p as the majority of the work that I do is in 60i for broadcast here in the US.

So what suggestions do you guys have for a workflow like this?

    Thanks for the help!

You could just leave it 24p. I don’t know any DVD player that won’t play a 24p movie. As to the motion blur… I would try shooting 60i then creating the PAL & NTSC DVDs from that. If you normally shoot 60i you should already have some footage to test with.

I do a handful of dance recitals each year and shoot them 50i (because I’m in Australia) and master the DvDS from that – 50i converted to 25p is way better for faster motion.

The other thing your client may consider is that it’s been decades since PAL DVD players and TVs didn’t natively support NTSC playback. Even major movie studios have released their films here in NTSC rather than PAL. There may be no need to have more than one master.
