If you are using the DVDA templates, you need to include audio in the output under ‘Custom’ settings. There is a check box that by default is cleared. You need to select it and save the template.

I’m not using DVDA templates by choice. That’s just the only way I’ve been able to render without reducing the image area and adding four bars.

Step by Step …
Make Movie > Save it to my hard drive > MPEG 2/DVD Architect NTSC Widescreen > Advanced Render …

At this point, the ‘render as’ dialog box shows me saving as mp4, not mpg as I selected in the previous box. Change ‘Save as type’ to MPEG-2.

Description shows Audio: None, and the “Custom” button is greyed out.

To recap:
Type: MPEG2
Template: DVDA NTSC Widescreen
Produces an output file with the same dimensions as the source file, and with no bars … and NO Audio. I’ve tried multiple other combinations which all result in four bars surrounding the output file.

I’m sure the answer is so simple that I’m overlooking it. I hope.

I have video files in two formats which I wish to process, mpg and m25s. All I ask of the program is that I can output the finished video with the same dimensions as the source file, and without BARS around it.

The fact that you selected MPEG-2 as a render option and Vegas is telling you that the “Save As” type is MP4 tells me that there’s something seriously wrong with your copy of Vegas.
My suggestion is to to do an uninstall-reinstall and see if that fixes things.
Have you installed any other software or codec packs recently?

To my knowledge, no new codecs installed since Vegas.

As a last resort, I will uninstall/re-install as you suggest. I was hoping the problem might be something I was doing wrong as a novice user, and to find out what that error was. On the other hand, I’m not a computer newbie, so it wouldn’t say much for Vegas if it were so difficult to do something so simple as to get a rendered file the same dimensions (without borders) as the source file.

Because I’m not eager to do the reinstall … is there anything else I might try? More info I can provide to help diagnose the problem?

Let me understand this is your problem:

From the main menu you select File > ‘Render As’
You then select Save File as Type: MPEG-2
You can select DVD Architect NTSC Widescreen, but the ‘Custom’ button remains greyed out.

Is this correct?

Yes, that is correct, the Custom button is greyed out at that point.

I have to concur with Mike that the problem could be with your installation.

I don’t use Vegas Movie Studio Platinum, so I cannot comment on the Advanced Render settings. Vegas Pro does not have such a button to my knowledge.
