  • Found the Cause of V12 Crashing

Posted by Ken Bennett on October 2, 2013 at 9:24 pm

After months of trying to figure out the cause of all my crashing problems, and not blaming V12, but something about my computer setup, likes like it is a V12 problem. V12 does not like MOV files. Say what you like but I have very few crashes while working in project where no MOV files are present. As soon as I start to introduce MOV files into the timeline, the constant crashes start. By constant I mean as many as 10 crashed within less than 60 minutes. Remove the MOV files and the crashing goes WAY WAY down.

The MOV files in question are from Digital Juice and Rampant Design, directly imported or rendered.

I have used DJ products for well over 10 years on V8 through V11 with not much of an issue. Something must have changed in V12.

No problem for me when working with MOV files from Rampant,
Digital Juice or any other source in Vegas 12!

Your issue is not with any particular Quicktime version,
Something is off with your rig as to why certain MOV
files crashes Vegas… I cant give you an answer as to what.

My recent issue has not been with MOV files from say, Canon video cameras, but rather with MOV footage obtained from an iPhone. I had to use my dated version of Pinnacle studio to render the files out to m2t so that I could continue editing.

My system specs: Intel i7 970, 12GB RAM, ASUS P6T, Vegas Pro 12 (x64), Windows 7 x64 Ultimate, Vegas Production Assistant 1.0, VASST Ultimate S Pro 4.1, Neat Video Pro 2.6

Notwithstanding that there HAS been much debate about which version of QT is installed on a PC, let’s attack this issue on the actual Media. Does your MOV file match your Project Settings?

BTW, SONY ask that for VP12 QT version: “Apple® QuickTime® 7.1.6 or later for reading and writing QuickTime files

All my output from my PnS SX50 is MOV. This from MEDIAINFO:

    Format : MPEG-4
    Format profile : QuickTime
    Codec ID : qt

[Ken Bennett] “The MOV files in question are from Digital Juice and Rampant Design, directly imported or rendered.”

What codec do they use? You can check the codec by either opening up the Event properties and looking in the Media tag, or open the file in QuickTime Player and use Ctrl+I to bring up the video inspector.

If they are Targa sequence you may have found the problem. Never use Targa on a PC, that format is optimized for Mac. I would use Motion-JPEG if you don’t need an Alpha channel and PNG if you do. Digital Juice allows you to create your own templates and I recommend that you make an M-JPEG template for use with Vegas Pro. That’s what I use.
