Formatting everything – Please advise…
Posted by Josh Evans on May 16, 2008 at 11:15 amOK I’ve decided to do the massive thing of formatting Zeroing all data on my hard disk and externals.
Could anyone please tell me the optimum settings to choose for formatting?
If im right, I should do everything as Mac os x Extended. But what about HFS+ ? I cant find this setting anywhere?
Thanks

Zeroing is just to make sure that any trace of any document is overwrited.
I don’t see this very necessary, unless you have state secrets and you are afraid that somebody will still your HD and recover the information:-)
And a “zeroing’ in deep, takes ages.
If you are going to format your external HDs, check Mac OX Extended (NOT JOURNALED).
If you will re-install your system, the installer will format the HD as Mac OX Extended Journaled. About the HFS+ you don’t have to worry. All the Mac OX Extended options formats as HFS+. Only the FAT32 option don’t.Mac OX 10.5.2-FC 6.02-QT 7.4.1
G5 2x2Gh 4GbRAM-BlackMagic Extreme
PMBP 17″Core2Duo 4GbRAM-AJA ioHD
JVC DTV-17″
SONY EX-1 . SONY PD170
..and always a big mess on top of the table. -

May 16, 2008 at 1:16 pmYou should zero out drives that have ben previously formatted as DOS and used. Even if there are no state secrets on it, you should do this. Erasing a drive simply dumps the directory. I was told that because DOS formatting using a different directory structure, parts of it will get left behind on the drive and can cause problems. Segments will still have DOS directory information on it that will not be written over.
All the best,
Tom

May 16, 2008 at 7:10 pm[Steve Eisen] “turn Journaling off.”
Here we go with this again.
This is not necessarily true. Journaling does not need to be off.
What kind of externals do you have, Josh?
