Please can someone help sort out my confusion…before i open my gob and tell the client something that is inaccurate (or just plain wrong)

I have been asked to send a commercial out on dvd (mpeg 2 format). Normally, i only send out on digibeta.

I believe the mpeg 2 is destined for broadcast, but the material is being requested by the company who make the product and not a broadcaster, with the intention that it will be forwarded on to different vendors in various countries for local conversion.

I thought that Digibeta was the worldwide accepted standard for broadcast – am i wrong?

    Do broadcasters accept mpeg2?

Are there any useful guidelines for creating a broadcastable (is that a word?) mpeg2 from 10 bit uncompressed 16:9 full height anamorphic PAL?

    thanks in advance

I prefer to watch a good DVD that a bad DBetacam.
To make an MPG2, just bring your 10b Unc movie to Compressor and use a “Best quality” setup. Check 16×9 in Aspect ratio. Audio .aiff.
If you are not happy with your MPG2 there are few parameters to tweak to get better quality.

    Mac OX 10.5.2-FC 6.02-QT 7.4.1
    G5 2x2Gh 4GbRAM-BlackMagic Extreme
    PMBP 17″Core2Duo 4GbRAM-AJA ioHD
    JVC DTV-17″
    SONY EX-1 . SONY PD170
..and always a big mess on top of the table.

    Hi adam,
i am here in PAL land and would be very suprised if any broadcaster accepted MPegs. I imagine the ‘delivery’ company you are sending this to has it wrong. And in 2 months they will request a deliverable format! I would make a digi just in case

    cheers

Rafael – “I prefer to watch a good DVD that a bad DBetacam.” i hope you are refering to content and not actual image quality?

I was joking but just a bit.
When I go to Europe and I see the signal broadcasted by some channels, I really prefer the image from a DVD.
I sow last February some basketball with so much blocks in the moving areas that was looking like MPG1.
As Nick I think strange that they request you an ad in MPG2. Publicity used to be the most exigent about formats and specs. Long after the arrival of the Betacam the advertising companies kept sending theyr works in 1’C.
But this was so long agoooooooooooo…:-)

I know what you mean – some of the satellite channels have ridiculous amounts of compression on them.

The problem with this particular scenario is that the people requesting the material are not “in the buisness” and do not understand the differences between formats. They make a specific product, which we sell in the UK. We made a commercial, which they want to supply to other sellers around the world, so have asked me to supply audio dats and mpeg2 dvds!

Its my feeling that they have someone with a little knowledge who thinks he knows whats wanted without actually checking his facts. I’m going to send Digibeta as well, because i’m a pro and don’t want my work buggered about with as mpeg2.
