  • format compression and project sequence settings

    Hello,

This is a fairly basic question, although I haven’t had much luck finding an answer. I’d like to know what the relation is between the format compression of my footage and that of the sequence setting. When I go to Item Properties, Format, the compression for my footage is 720p60. On the other hand, my project sequence setting is 720p24. The discrepancy in these settings is not causing any problems for Final Cut, but I don’t quite understand if these settings are the same or not, and why they do not need to correspond for Final Cut to work properly. Any information would be greatly appreciated, or I would also welcome suggestions as to where I might find related information.

    Thanks,
    Matt

If you are using the latest version of Final Cut, when you first drop a clip into your timeline, if the clip’s settings do not match the sequence’s settings, FCP will ask you if you want it to automatically change the sequence’s settings to match the clip you are trying to drop into the timeline. You should do this, however, once your sequence settings are established, you can not change them again. So if you try to drop footage with a different format into your timeline, it will need to be rendered to view in real time, but I don’t think the render will cause the clip to then match the timeline settings. Does that make sense?

Walter Biscardi does a good job explaining this in a tutorial:

Thanks, Robert. That was helpful, and I will check out the link you sent, although I’m not sure if it directly addresses my question. Final Cut doesn’t need to render my footage in the Timeline. If it did, then I would better understand the relation between the Format compression as displayed in Item Properties and the Sequence Settings. So I’m still not quite sure how the one relates to the other. Any other ideas?

I found that Walter Biscardi video so damn helpful, thank you.

The only thing is I don’t have all the presets he seems to have. The one that I need is Apple Pro Res.

    The footage I’m using is 1920 x 1080, 25fps, Apple Pro Res.
I’m using Final Cut Pro 6.0.

Any reason why this would be so and is there a way to get around it?

    Cheers
