Format Choice
Hi,
I am looking at purchasing a new camera and have been reading posts on the Cow about editing in FCP2 with Sony’s XDCAM SxS codec with GOP vs Panasonic’s P2. I briefly rented a EX-1 and Panasonic 170, as well as the Canon HDV. I’m not doing HD output for the most part yet so SD down convert to DVD is the bulk of the work. I have a Mac book pro 2 yrs old and I found the XDCAM timeline when dropping things in would move slowly. Conversion was long to SD I tried Ken Stone’s among others some the out put was poor. Is there a good workflow to SD for the Sony XDCAM or P2? I read some editors who strongly dislike editing with Sony’s format. The new JVC U700 is a consideration, with native QuickTime files, but I haven’t heard much on that new camera. Any advice would be appreciated.

SD? Well, with the EX1 you can only shoot HD…period. But with the HPX-170, you can shoot SD to the P2 cards. DV25 or DV50. SD right from the get go. Or with P2 you have DVCPRO HD (which the HPX-170 shoots) and AVCintra (that the higher end cameras shoot). With DVCPRO HD, the DVCPRO HD codec is VERY easy to work with…and that is the only way it imports. But it is the easiest HD format to work with, IMHO. AVCintra imports as ProRes, which is another great codec.
The EX1/EX3 is a great camera and produces stunning images, but is an ergonomic nightmare handheld, and bit of a pain in post. Via the Sony Software you can only import as XDCAM EX, but with the FCP plugin you can import it as ProRes, and that is a better codec to use. But as I said, this camera only shoots HD, no SD.

Can you definitely transcode XDCam to ProRes via L&T? I’m not seeing any options at all for XDCAM transcoding – only REDCODE, AVCHD and P2 AVC-Intra. As far as I know I’ve got the most recent plugin from Sony. Am I missing something? I hate that I can’t transcode XDCAM via L&T but maybe I can.

Ah…right you are. I have limited experience with XDCAM. I thought it was there, but I can’t see it either.
