January 25, 2013 at 12:41 amAbrams is actually the last of the big name choices I would have wanted.
I was sort of hoping for Affleck.

January 25, 2013 at 1:19 amSorry but I don’t look forward to another in the Star Wars saga regardless of the creative team which is pretty baller. Not particularly interested in the latest Star Trek either. Maybe space is becoming the Lost frontier (see what I did there 🙂

yes – me too a little.
Still: better than Ratner eh?a lot is riding on the writer – and sure there are worse writers.

January 25, 2013 at 2:20 amI don’t think Ratner was ever on the list. The contenders from my understanding were Del Toro, Affleck, Bird, and Vaughn.
I love Del Toro, but I don’t think it would have been a good fit. I would have been happy with any of the other three. I think Joe Johnston was mentioned, but I don’t think he was ever a serious contender- but he might have been a good “workman” director like Kershner was.
The director needs to be good enough to become invisible to the proceedings, from my perspective. A great sense of pacing, and the ability to construct a good sequence, but not too overt in his stylings.
Agreed about the writer.

January 26, 2013 at 2:12 amI’ve definitely found myself less interested in movies like this in the last decade that I ever imagined I would. Maybe that speaks to me, or maybe to the movies themselves. I don’t know.

January 26, 2013 at 2:17 pmWeird choice, I hated the new Star Trek. It was sad to see Lucas sell off to Disney and now this? I guess I’m a purist.

“Exactly. The old Star Trek worked and they didn’t have one hundredth of SFX capability or lens flare capability. There’s a lesson in there somewhere.
