i have a sequence that we had to export almost shot to do some after effects work on. i was hoping to be able to render each shot out of after effects with the same name as the original clip and just reconnect them to the original edit. but when FCP searches for files to reconnect, it doesn’t find the newly rendered ones even thought they have the same frame rate, codec and name. I can force it by manually selecting the file if i turn off matching names or if i switch it from video files to all files. but doing this manually would take too long. what is it that the clips are seeing that looks different than the original files? is there a way to make this work?

I’d guess that the rendered files don’t contain the reel name for starters, so FCP doesn’t recognize them automatically, let alone the fact that the timecode probably doesn’t match either… Has to have the same properties I’d guess. So the answer to your question is that I don’t think there’s a way to do what you want to do automatically… you’ll need to reconnect manually.

If the workflow is to use AE for every clip, why not process those clips first, then import them into FCP for the edit…?

Files you render from AE will typically have a .mov extension at the end of the name. Files created by capturing video from tape into FCP will typically not have the .mov extension. So if your names probably don’t really match.
